January Isaiah Class Recap

Next Class:
February 16th
Teresa Vincent's House
4392 Osprey Drive
7-8:30pm

Melissa Smith, a former member of our ward, is coming down from Fort Wayne Indiana to teach us a 5 lesson seminar on learning to understand Isaiah.  She will teach every 3rd Tuesday, from January through May.
Our first lesson covered the questions of why we should study Isaiah, the history and geography of the Middle East during the time of Isaiah, (the Assyrians were really bad- think Isis- only more of them) and the way of the Jews.
At the end of verse 5 in 2 Nephi chapter 25 it says “…and I know that the Jews do understand the things of the prophets, and there is none other people that understand the things which were spoken unto the Jews like unto them, save it be that they are taught after the manner of the things of the Jews.”  Melissa discovered that the Jews study by using commentaries, prayer, and studying and discussing with others.  This is the way she gained her understanding of Isaiah. (Which she pointed out is a real work in progress)  So Yes, Isaiah is hard, but with some work we can comprehend it.

Join us next time where she is going to discuss the literary structures that will help us understand Isaiah better.  Isaiah was a poet and she will teach us some of the symbols he uses and what they refer to.  She will explain chiasmus and parallelisms and Isaiah’s use of these.

CHECK THIS OUT!!!

She has made a Facebook page for this class called Understanding Isaiah.
Let Teresa Vincent (812-343-4936) know if you’d like to be added. She has posted her power point from the first class as well as other interesting topics related to our discussions so far.  Everyone is welcome. We’d be happy to have more people.  The spirit was there and Melissa has a way of gathering lots of information and explaining it in a way that’s easy to understand.
